Dr. Avijit Mitra, MD, is a Mayo Clinic–trained adult psychiatrist with additional subspecialty training in child and adolescent psychiatry from Yale University’s Child Study Center. Based in Woodbridge, Connecticut, Dr. Mitra brings more than 22 years of experience treating patients across all age groups, integrating evidence-based medicine with a compassionate, whole-person approach. A Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, he is recognized for his leadership, commitment to clinical excellence, and dedication to improving the mental health of his community. Dr. Mitra’s practice philosophy centers on collaboration and balance. He integrates medication management with psychotherapy and lifestyle guidance, taking into account biological, psychological, and social factors that influence each individual’s well-being. He maintains close partnerships with pediatricians, primary care physicians, therapists, and educators to ensure continuity of care—particularly for children and adolescents. Dr. Mitra’s academic foundation includes a Master’s in Neuroscience from the Center for Neuroscience at Rutgers University and a medical education at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Columbia University, where he was awarded the Sidak K. Hilal Excellence in Research Award (1997). His training at the Mayo Clinic and Yale University shaped his dual expertise in both adult and child psychiatry, allowing him to bridge science and empathy in every patient interaction. Currently, Dr. Mitra serves as an Attending Psychiatrist in the Department of Mental Health while maintaining a private practice in adult, child, and adolescent psychiatry. His past academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University (2003–2008) reflects his dedication to both teaching and advancing psychiatric knowledge.
