About
Dr. Avijit Mitra is a compassionate and highly trained psychiatrist whose work spans over two decades of service in both academic and clinical practice. Born and educated internationally, Dr. Mitra came to the United States for higher education, putting himself through medical and graduate school at Ivy League institutions through hard work and scholarships. His journey reflects perseverance, empathy, and a deep respect for the human mind and spirit. After earning a Master’s in Neuroscience from Rutgers University and completing medical training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Dr. Mitra pursued his residency in adult psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Yale University. These experiences shaped his comprehensive approach to care—one that emphasizes the whole person, not just symptoms. Dr. Mitra has practiced as both an academic physician and a private practitioner, combining research-based insight with clinical experience. He currently serves as an Attending Psychiatrist in the Department of Mental Health and maintains a thriving private practice where he treats adults, children, and adolescents. His expertise includes medication management, psychotherapy integration, and specialized experience in autism spectrum disorders. Recognized by the Connecticut State Psychiatric Society for his volunteer work with the crisis team during the Sandy Hook tragedy, Dr. Mitra exemplifies service through compassion and community engagement. Outside his practice, he enjoys tennis, hiking, and time in nature—pursuits that reflect his belief in balance and overall well-being.
